The larger of the two halls on Gangai Amman Koil Street covers around 600 square feet at a cost of ₹19.70 lakh, while the West Jones Road facility spans about 500 square feet with an investment of ₹12 lakh. Both dining halls are expected to offer sanitation workers a clean and comfortable space to rest and eat during their demanding work schedules.
The initiative comes amid broader attention on sanitation worker welfare in Chennai, which has included free nutritious meal schemes and other benefits aimed at supporting those who perform vital public health duties. Officials said the new dining halls are part of ongoing welfare measures to recognise the contributions of sanitation staff and improve their working conditions.
